Know your flags - what do they mean?
The different flags on the beach are there for a purpose and your safety.
- Red and yellow flags mark the areas of water that are patrolled by lifeguards. This is the safest area to swim.
- Black and white chequered flags are marked out for use by craft (such as windsurfers, kayaks). It is not safe to swim in this area.
- The red flag flying alone signifies danger. Never go in the water when the red flag is flying.
- An orange windsock flying at the beach indicates that the wind conditions are especially dangerous - do not take inflatables in the sea when you see this windsock.
