Southend-on-Sea Crew

Southend-on-Sea lifeboat crew

The crew

The crew at Southend respond to over 100 shouts a year and man four rescue vehicles including a hovercraft. So even though they may number over 30 personnel, there is never a shortage of work to go around!

Stuart Olley

Stuart Olley, Senior Helmsman

Stuart has been a crew member since 1989. He was promoted to senior helmsman in 1999. On his first weekend as duty helmsman he was called to 13 shouts.

John Foster

John Foster, Mechanic

John joined the crew in 1982 and retired from active service in 2005. He was awarded a bronze medal in 1999 for his role as senior helmsman in a particularly tricky rescue. Fortunately John is never far from the station these days, as well as being in charge of maintenance of all the rescue craft he is always happy to show visitors around the station.
