Fishguard History
1822 A lifeboat station was established at Fishguard.
Between 1834 and 1855 eight Silver Medals were awarded for gallantry including two in 1847 to Martha and Margaret Llewellyn – the first Medals to be awarded to women.
1855 The RNLI took over the lifeboat station. A new boathouse was built at the top of Goodwick Beach.
1861 Silver Medals were awarded to David Beddoe and Albert Furlong for rescuing two men from the sloop Elizabeth and Mary.
1869 A second (No. 2) lifeboat station was opened.
1873 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain James White for his gallant services saving 50 lives from various wrecks.
1875 A second Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain James White for saving 16 lives from four different vessels.
1877 A third Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain James White for rescuing four people from the dandy Adventure and 11 people from the brigantine B F Nash.
1882 The lifeboat launched five times on 16 November to 15 different vessels and saved 46 lives.
1886 During a rescue the No. 1 lifeboat capsized and all the crew were thrown out; fortunately no lives were lost.
1899 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain James Thomas for his gallant services in saving life from shipwreck.
1906 A Silver Medal was awarded to James Thomas on his resignation as Coxswain Superintendent.
1907 The No. 1 station was closed. A new slipway and boathouse were built for the new lifeboat.
1909 The new motor lifeboat arrived at the station.
1911 The boathouse was removed to a new site and a slipway was built by the Great Western Railway.
1921 A Gold Medal was awarded to Coxswain John Howells, Silver Medals to Thomas O Davies, Robert E Simpson and Thomas Holmes, and Bronze Medals to the other nine crew for rescuing seven people from the wrecked Dutch motor schooner Hermina.
1922 A Centenary Vellum was awarded.
1930 A new boathouse and slipway were completed.
1972 A 150th Anniversary Vellum was awarded.
1981 HRH The Duke of Kent named the new lifeboat on 27 October.
1984 A Framed Letter of Thanks was awarded to Coxswain Francis George for rescuing three crew from the fishing vessel Oneida.
1994 The Trent class lifeboat Blue Peter VII was placed on service on 2 September. She was funded by viewers of the Blue Peter television programme.
1995 An inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established with a D class lifeboat.
2003 Her Majesty The Queen awarded Francis George, lately coxswain, with an MBE.
2006 The new D class lifeboat Team Effort was placed on service on 10 April.
